Robert Coleman Trussell: Guestbook

Jim Redus

November 26, 2007

Robert: I just spoke with your wife. I was so surprised to find you living here. I went to grade and high school with Mary and Phillip in Ricardo and Kingsville. I have attempted to get emails through to Mary in NY but she never answers. I still have family in Kingsville and Riviera. Would love to talk with you sometimes. Maybe over coffee or something. My wife and I live in Liberty. Look forward to hearing from you.

I hope this ain't illegal, I've written on this guestbook before, but I can't help it. This music makes me want to break the rules!
I've had a whale of a year and this record went all over the place with me.
Early in the year, land developers wanted my Southern California ranch or else it would be the imminent domain business, so me and my wife looked to Oregon. We moved there, and stewed in the pines, all that rain coming down day and night. We felt lonesome there, and after a month or so, looked back to California. After a little humiliating discussion (begging) with the developers, we moved back into our old ranch, this time as caretakers, and it was damn spooky. Dust and mustiness and mold and rats and spider webs and overgrown weeds in this, our old and abandoned home, waiting for the bulldozers. Today, we live down in LA in a cute old house, happy and OK at last.
But throughout this whole time, this CD was in our car CD player, up in Oregon it played in the little plastic Target-bought CD player, later, a couple of U-Haul truck CD players. And now, tonight, at home.
I'm going on too long, don't want to hog this space. But this year I went through feeling lost, confused, lonely, wondering what area code I was in, sick of crummy motel rooms going here and there, north and south.
This record, written and sung by a man whose obviously been through all of the above, was great and necessary company.
"What The Sidewalks Say" really kept me going, but all of it is with me now.
Buy this record.
And nag Mr. Trussell for more!

Holy shit sticks, this album is damn good! Just found it online because I was googling "Texas Gothic" to see if the title had been taken... I'm glad it has been. This is genuine, avoids "parody", but still hits it right on... a hard thing to do for rural Southern artists. Ordering the CD right now, everyone else should to. Best of luck to you.

Hey, just a note that a review of your CD featured in the latest issue of Blues Matters!...I’ve included an extract below…"Once you get past the first 4 tracks of this album, it starts to get better. Those before have potential for good melodies and lyrics, but it just doesn't seem to happen. The more you have faith and continue to listen, the more you start to enjoy the voice of Trussel, and you realise it's one you wish you were born with......" www.bluesmatters.com

Robert:
I am sitting here "fit to bust" with pride, as a native Texan, that we have produced yet another fine singer songwriter. The songs constitute a musical climate all their own, fueled by emotions that are as ominous, varied and powerful as a Spring thunderstorm in South Texas.
Well, done, compadre. I hope your fine accomplishment is recognized all around the country. You deserve it!

First I was crying, then I was tapping my foot, and then next I went for a long, long drive in the country, way into the night, feeling, somehow, an "eternal pull to see the world on the other side of the horizon."
