You know his Daddy begged him For your Mama's sake son do not stray
But he cast his vote when he killed a man over cards on Christmas Day
So he fought the carpetbaggers, Texas Rangers too
Man he fought anybody, it was all he knew to do
And he took a herd to Kansas, killed a man along the way
He let his guns do his talkin', Man he had a lot to say
He faced down Mister Hickok on the streets of Abilene
People there told the story, damndest thing they ever seen
What can you say for a lost boy
Mad dog Texas son
He died with scars upon his back &
Forty notches on his guns
When he was a boy he saw the soldiers march away
Stars & Bars flying so vainly in the wind
He fought the war between the states till the very day he died
He always claimed he did his killin' in the name of old gray men
He watched his youth just slip away from behind cold prison bars
He wrote his life down on paper & he counted up his scars &
On the day that he walked free he wore a watch & chain
He never walked in shadows, he never spoke of his pain
And he never pulled a gun again, not even the day he died
Shootin' dice in old El Paso with whiskey on the side
They laid him in a grave not far from the muddy Rio Grande
And they cleaned his guns & put 'em in the box beside his hands
What can you say for a lost boy
Mad dog Texas son
He died with scars upon his back &
Forty notches on his guns
