Days of Jubilee

(Robert Coleman Trussell)
2008-06-20
FIDDLE & BANJO: KELLY WERTS
Samuel was a slave down in Texas
Herdin' cattle for a man named Dupree
Till one day the word come to Texas that
Lincoln set the ones in bondage free

Dupree say Samuel I cannot pay you
I guess you're free to roam if you so please
Samuel say I reckon I will ramble
So i can see what a free man sees

CHORUS:
Well glory hallelujah, freedom is at hand
You're welcome on the highway to the Promised Land
Let us lift our voices & let us sing Glory be
Sing a song for Samuel & his days of jubilee

Samuel took a job shoeing horses
He saved a little money on the side
Bought himself an old Walker Colt
Made a holster from cowhide
For there was trouble in the land now people
You know a black man could find no peace
So Samuel took the road down to Austin &
He joined the Texas State Police

CHORUS

Well he made his mark upon a piece of paper
They gave him a star stamped out of tin
They sent him out upon the highway
To bring peace & justice to all men
He stood guard at the polls on election day
He tried to keep the refugees from harm
He saved a man from hangin' down on the Brazos &
He shot a trouble maker in the arm

CHORUS

Well the days of freedom ended as soon as they'd begun
They took away his badge Mama but they couldn't take his guns
Once a seed is planted most times a tree will grow
Cause people take their stories with 'em everywhere they go
Oh everywhere they go

CHORUS
