Another Dutch Rave (sort of) - June 28, 2006
James McMurtry touches my head more than my heart. I admire his music more than it turns me on. Inward looking, nasal sounding, Robert Coleman Trussell is very much in the vein of McMurtry. His boots are gray from the Texas soil and you can also hear the spirit of Townes van Zandt and bypassed towns. It reports with innocence.
Robert Coleman Trussell plays guitar, harmonica and sings. Kelly Werts adds organ, violin, and enthusiasm. Is Texas Gothic a delayed debut? It seems to be. The web site that has nothing but the photo speaks volumes. He's like 40 going on 50 by way of 20, but then again, maybe not - who knows? The songs are rural and a little depressing - men who live in the background and seldom speak their minds and bent to the breaking point. Billy Got Bad - the bottle and a pistol, and a woman who sells herself as The Queen of Pain. Rich and poor are depicted in Hell Across the Tracks. Since We Live In Heaven We Don't Need To Care.
The songs are kind of like second hand cars. Here and there a scratch or a dent, but with a certain familiarity. Robert Coleman Trussell writes his songs a bit too much alike - no exclamation points or colons. There are 15 of them, and the songs are to some extent undermined by their barrenness. In some I hear the young Dylan, but that may not be a good thing for Texas Gothic. In Robert Coleman Trussell's voice there is a silence that the afternoon sun overcomes and seems to leave hiding in the small town.
In any case, the song about the Spanish girls makes the CD. --- Wim Boluijt, HANX.NET
